Since you haven’t specified, I’m going to keep my fingers crossed that this competition is open to overseas readers. My favourite fashion book is probably “Viking Clothing” by Thor Ewing, since I’m a Viking re-enactor…
Hi Jenny,
Yes, the contest is open to overseas readers! Glad you entered.
I really, really need this book for my collection of fashion and costume books.
Valerie Steele’s “Paris Fashion”! It is an utter treat for Francophiles and fashionistas alike.
I would be thrilled to win any one of these three fashionable items!
To answer your question my latest favorite fashion book is “Lanvin”(Dean Merceron) which I received for my birthday this summer~it makes my heart race a bit faster when I look at such beauty:)
From Denise Farinsky:
My favorite fashion book is a tie between “Savage Beauty: Alexander McQueen” and “The Collection of the Kyoto Costume Institute: Fashion–A History from the 18th to the 20th Century.
I’d love to win the catalogue most, but any of the prizes would be a thrill. My favorite fashion book ever is “Decades of Beauty”
Hello, Great blog, great site! And MY personal fave book is itself a glamorous object: “Hollywood Costume” by Dale McConathy and none other than DIANA VREELAND herself.
My daughter attended FIDM and I would love to give this to her for a Christmas present.
It would be wonderful to win the Note Cards (for me) or the Paper Dolls for my grand-daughter. We love going to FIDM exhibits.
My favorite fashion book is by far the “Fashion” of the Kyoto Costume Institute. It was my first book on historical costume, and despite collecting more and more over the years, I still refer back to the KCI book for inspiration. Just the massive range of historical costume included, and the fabulous all-color photos really make it a go-to book for me. It’s hard to pick just one, though ๐
I love this type of book & Blog! I used to collect old perfume bottles. ๐
I would love a copy to help my fashion and museums studies… I cant separate my loves! FIDM Began my love affair…
My favorite fashion book is the one I have in my hands at any given time.
It looks like a lovely book! It is hard to pick a favourite. My most recent purchases were the fashion in detail series and they are lovely to look at. I think my favourite is still The complete Costume History. It is huge, and shipping to Australia cost more than the book but it was well worth it.
Looks like a cool book, I would love to win it! I love all fashion-related books!
I think my favorite fashion-related book has to be 9 Heads. Very easy to understand, has LOADS of references and information. As an artist I can say it greatly helped improved my drawing skills!
I’d love to get a copy of this book free! I haven’t had the money to order a copy yet, what with the holidays coming up. Right now my favorite book in my collection is the Kyoto Costume Institute’s Fashion book because of all its yummy pictures!
Love fashion books, particularly historical fashion!
My favorite Fashion related-book, My Favourite Dress by Gity Monset, Samantha Erin Safer, and Robert de Niet
My favorite fashion book is definitely Janet Arnold’s “Patterns of Fashion 2”, a.k.a. the one that covers 1860-1940. ๐
Hands down, the KCI Fashion book! I use it as inspiration constantly! They do a lovely job of styling the costumes too.
My favorite fashion book is “Adrian: Silver Screen to Custom Label.” He’s my favorite movie costume designer so I can’t resist anything that gives me the chance to admire his work.
Glad to hear the give-away is open to those of us overseas. Thanks for the chance to win a Fabulous prize!
Whoops! Sorry, got so carried away I forgot to mention a favourite fashion-related book. For my last birthday I was given “Edith Head” by Jay Jorgensen, which is my current favourite.
I’ve heard “fabulous” things about this exhibit (and thi book) – I wish I lived close enough to visit it in person!
From Marcus Leung:
I’ve always been a fan of Ingrid Loschek’s critical approach and have recommend “When Clothes Become Fashion: Design and Innovation Systems” to many people who are interested in a more analytical look at fashion, as both a product and an idea.
From Ginny Reynolds:
What Clothes Reveal: The Language of Clothing in Colonial and Federal America (2002) by Linda Baumgartenโโa catalog from an exhibition at the Dewitt Wallace Museum in Colonial Williamsburg. Baumgarten’s work has been an inspiration to me and What Clothes Reveal remains a favorite resource long after the exhibition closed. This catalog would be an excellent addition to my personal library, especially when the logistics of travel will prevent me from seeing the exhibition.
From Ingrid Grunnill:
That’s difficult! I have so many favourites. One of my earliest is Anne Buck’s Dress in eighteenth-century England. I learned a lot from that, but the illustrations are mostly black-and-white and not very clear at that. These days we get books with beautiful full-colour photographs. One of my favourites is Dangerous liaisons from the Metropolitan museum New York.
From Renee Ormsbee:
My favorite fashion book is the ever popular “Fashion” by the Kyoto Institute, just for it’s sheer eye candy appeal. I also love “The Tudor Tailor” for a historical reproduction look with plenty of great patterns and interior photos of extant pieces!
From Leigh Wishner:
Such a difficult question…sort of like choosing a favorite child. Of the more recent publications, my favorite is Hamish Bowles’ “Balenciaga” catalogue–the blend of historicism and modernism, linking Spanish art and cultural traditions with his exquisite sense of personal design, is noteworthy. In the past decade, a small but treasured favorite is “Les Annees Folles 1919/1929” catalogue from the Musee Galliera. Oh la la, c’est tellement chic! I’d *love* to slip a copy of “FABULOUS!” in between these titles on my fashion bookshelf…thanks!
I love Dressed for the Photographer: Ordinary Americans and Fashion, 1840-1900. It truly has been a great book for research and just overall history about the 19th century and early American photography. The author does a great job of explaining 19th century fashion through all different images and people.
My favorite fashion books is anything written by Aileen Ribeiro. Her books are always so well researched and have lots of gorgeous images!
How lovely! I must cite Tom Tierney’s civil war paper doll booklets as the reason I became interested in fashion and fashion design. I have moved on since, but I can’t forget the beginning!
I received “Hats: An Anthology” by Stephen Jones from a good friend for Christmas. Wonderful pictures!
It would be exciting to get any of these prizes. I read a lot of fashion related books. The one I read recently is “Banners of Silk” by laker
From Christine Y.
I would love to receive the catalog book. My favorite books are “Collection of the Kyoto Costume Institute Fashion History from 18th to 20th Century” and “Costume Jewelry” by Judith Miller.
Though I’m not eligible to win the book–darn it, because I can tell you it’s, indeed, fabulous–my favorite fashion history book is “The Opulent Era” by Elizabeth Ann Coleman. The house is burning, that’s the one I’d grab. And “FABULOUS!” is next to it on my bookshelf…
From Manda:
Only one?!? Impossible! My three current favorites are Fashion from the Kyoto Costume Institute, Fashioning Fashion from the LA County Museum of Art, and Seventeenth and Eighteenth-Century Fashion in Detail by the V and A.
From Riza Miklowski:
Wow! I would love to win one of these gifts! My favorite fashion book is Lucile: London, Paris, New York and Chicago because I love looking at her wonderful original designs and dreaming about how beautiful it would have been to wear one.
I’m a huge fan of the “costume in detail” books published by the V&A! I love how close you get to historic garments- and the line drawings!
Historical Fashion in Detail! My favorite!
good..
From Jennifer Torres:
Mine is Janet Arnold’s Patterns of Fashion 1560-1620. However, Seventeenth-Century Women’s Dress Patterns: Book 1 by Jenny Tiramani and Susan North might be up there after I finish reading it. I heard Tiramani speak at a conference at Colonial Williamsburg and the pictures she showed from it were amazing!
From Karen K. Helm:
I have so many favorite fashion-related books that I have read over and over (ie., Christian Dior’s Little Dictionary of Fashion, for one), but for this question, I’m suggesting a wonderful novel by Isabel Wolff, entitled A Vintage Affair. The power of beautiful clothes drives this touching story.
My current faborite is “Fashioning Fashion”, my favorite part about costume-related books being drooling over pretty pretty pictures. The pictures in this books are amazing !
The fashioning fashion book is a favorite of mine.
From Jacqueline WayneGuite:
My favorite fashion book changes on a regular basis, but right now let’s go with the Glass of Fashion.
