FIDM Museum’s annual exhibition has become a tradition for LA locals and movie lovers alike. This  unique show celebrates costumes that help bring memorable film characters to life, and gives visitors the opportunity to see the craftsmanship produced by Hollywood’s top costume designers. This year, we celebrate the exhibition’s 25th year of showcasing excellence in film costume design. Come explore the history of this exhibition at the FIDM Museum, and take a closer look at your favorite costumes from the movies of 2016. The exhibition will feature 23 of 2016’s most visually interesting films in a variety of genres. Highlights include Academy Award nominees for Best Costume Design La La Land (Mary Zophres), Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Colleen Atwood), Florence Foster Jenkins (Consolata Boyle), and Allied (Joanna Johnston). Superheros from Batman vs. Superman, Suicide Squad and Doctor Strange share the stage with period characters from Hail Caesar!, Love & Friendship, and Hidden Figures. We also shine the spotlight on fantasy and future with exquisite designs from Alice Through the Looking Glass, Star Trek Beyond, and the stop-motion puppets from Kubo and the Two Strings. Come see the best of the costume design industry when we open to the public February 7!

Exotica: Fashion & Film Costume of the 1920s

Exhibition-ExoticaCallot Soeurs Dress, c. 1925

Location, Location, Location! Exotic locations have long inspired fashion designers to re-imagine contemporary dress into hybrid silhouettes mixing East and West. Their creations evoke lands outside Western borders through unfamiliar motifs and patterns. In the 1920s, cinema storylines whisked viewers to out-of-the-way locales ruled by maharajahs, sultans, or conquistadors in fantasy productions of epic proportions staged on vast sets with thousands of exotically garbed extras. Hollywood’s influence on fashion trends was unstoppable as millions of fans bought into the dream that they, too, could inhabit their idols’ identities in store-bought coats and dresses mimicking Egyptian wraps, Mayan tunics, or Chinese cheongsam. Exotica: Fashion & Film Costume of the 1920s takes us on global adventures to explore fashion’s fascination with the "foreign" in film.
