Anne Bennion, Department Chair, outlined the mission of the major: “The Bachelor of Arts in Design degree prepares students to think creatively, critically, and divergently about the design process. Students learn to appreciate the universality of design, contextualize design problems, and blend historical and global perspectives with evolving trends as the foundation for inspired design solutions. Students become design innovators by learning to balance conventional design approaches with new, emergent thinking.”

Jillian Colin, FIDM BDSN graduate and sustainable fashion designer, explained: “An intense creative space is created within the FIDM BA Design program. If you are motivated and know what you want to do, then this is a great place to explore. You can literally curate your own creative, educational experience.”

With that in mind, Colin explained her process for some of her pieces that will be featured in the exhibition. “For my third capsule collection, I focused on using sustainable textiles and found materials. I collected drop cloths from the FIDM dye lab. Muslin protects the floor during screen printing and ink seeps into the fabric, and I found the result beautiful. I used that to make this collection, adding hand embroidery and threads I sourced from old trend books that were about to be thrown out. It was a goal of mine to keep the collection sustainable – so it was all made from found materials.”

Tiani Hernandez, designer, illustrator and storyteller, describes her journey though the BA program. “My final three quarters at FIDM were spent working on my thesis project. I chose to create something that would represent what I am passionate about: art, design, storytelling, and environmental protection. Thus, my first children’s book, Mikko’s Quest: A young polar bear’s quest to slow down global warming,’ was born.

“My goal was to create a storyline that would entertain and educate readers of every age and to illustrate each page as if each were a canvas. With these elements combined, I wanted Mikko’s Quest to evoke emotion and compassion from the reader, ultimately sparking a desire to take action against global warming.”
